Patrick Kane has not met with the Maple Leafs even though reports said he had done so earlier this week.

"After hearing earlier in the week that PKane was to meet with the Maple Leafs on Tuesday, I can confirm that meeting did NOT occur," John Shannon posted on X. "Leafs sources reached out to say it did not happen."

The 34-year-old is looking to be signed by an NHL club after spending several months rehabbing hip resurfacing surgery he had on June 1. Kane has been skating in Oakville, Ontario, where he continues to ramp up his play.

With Toronto so close to the cap already, plus the reports that they could be targeting a Calgary Flames defenseman, the Kane signing didn't seem to be possible. Even The Athletic's Chris Johnston called it a "longer shot" while saying "the possibility can't be ruled out entirely."

Johnston also reported that Kane wants to play somewhere where he can remain long-term and compete for a Stanley Cup.

Kane split last season between the Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers, putting up 21 goals and 36 assists in 73 games. He also had one goal and five assists in seven games with the Rangers in the playoffs.

The Maple Leafs are currently in Sweden for the 2023 NHL Global Series. They'll play two games in Stockholm — one against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday at 2 p.m. ET and the other against the Minnesota Wild at 8 a.m. ET on Sunday.
