Welcome to this edition of "The Stats Behind The Game." This recurring deep dive breaks down the analytics behind each Vancouver Canucks game as recorded by Natural Stat Trick. In this article, we look back on the Canucks most recent 5-1 loss to the L.A. Kings.
Despite having the analytical advantage, Vancouver struggled throughout the game. They won the even-strength scoring chances battle 25-17 and even had a 12-10 even-strength high-danger chances advantage, but could not break through against the Kings in any significant way. Outscored 4-0 at even strength, this was one of those nights where the whole team was frustrated to a point where it affected the final score.
The heatmap for Thursday night may be as dull as the game itself. In short, the Canucks could not score on the three high-danger shots they generated, while L.A. scored on three of the eight high-danger shots they recorded. While Vancouver did a good job preventing chances, egregious mistakes and poor play in the offensive zone cost them against the Kings.

To wrap things up, one player that stood out was Conor Garland. The Canucks winger played 13:27 at even strength and was tied for the team lead in individual high-danger chances created with three. He also threw two hits, finished the night with an xGF% of 92.06 and had a 5-0 high-danger chances advantage. While he didn't find the back of the net, he was pushing the pace all night and was almost rewarded but was denied by the post in the second period.
