Former Vancouver Canucks defenseman and trade target Chris Tanev has been traded to the Dallas Stars from the Calgary Flames.
Tanev's name has been bandied about trade rumors since the season began. Recent reports had suggested that the Flames were waiting to get a first-round pick in return for Tanev, but apparently, something changed.
The Stars have needed another defenseman, especially one like Tanev. He brings solid defensive ability to a team that needed an injection of grit.
The Stars also get Tanev on their roster significantly cheaper due to the Flames retaining 50% and the New Jersey Devils taking on another 25%.
At one point this season Canucks captain Quinn Hughes advocated to the front office that they should bring back Tanev. Hughes and Tanev played as a pair during the early part of Hughes' NHL career.
The Canucks had also been seen as a potential landing spot for Tanev, but after they acquired Elias Lindholm, their trading assets were significantly depleted.
Tanev will be a UFA after this season ends, and if he gets to the open market, he will be highly sought after.
