Per Frank Seravalli, the Vancouver Canucks and Elias Pettersson are closing in on an 8-year contract extension.
On Saturday, Elliotte Friedman reported that teams were calling the Canucks about Pettersson's trade availability, given the uncertainty surrounding his contract status.
The 25-year-old superstar is set to become an RFA after this season and will want a significant pay raise from his current $7,350,000 AAV. There were concerns from all over regarding whether Pettersson wanted to stay with the Canucks, but according to reports, those concerns should be squashed.
While there hasn't been an official announcement on the contract amount, there are some comparable contracts.
William Nylander signed a massive contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs earlier this season. His cap hit is $11.5 million. Pettersson could be seen as a better player overall than Nylander. Nylander is on pace to surpass 100 points in a season for the first time in his career, while Pettersson has already done that once and is on pace to do it again.
Buffalo Sabers' defenseman Rasmus Dahlin is the other contact that could be compared. Dahlin signed an 8-year contract extension in October with an $11 million cap hit.
If Pettersson is to get $12 million per year, that would make him the fourth highest-paid player in the NHL. While he certainly is one of the top players in the NHL, the Canucks likely will want to have some flexibility from a salary cap perspective.
More information should trickle out about this expected extension, but the Canucks front office and fans can breathe a sigh of relief as it looks like their No. 1 center is here to stay for a long time.
