Former Wheeling Nailers and Brooks Bandits head coach Ryan Papaioannou will step into Canucks head coach Manny Malhotra's old role with Abbotsford.
The Abbotsford Canucks have found their next head coach.
Former Wheeling Nailers head coach Ryan Papaioannou will be joining the Canucks organization, taking Vancouver head coach Manny Malhotra’s old role in Abbotsford. This news comes only a couple of days after the Nailers and Pittsburgh Penguins ended their ECHL affiliation agreement. Papaioannou was connected to the Canucks back in June.
“We are very excited to welcome Ryan to the Canucks, as we know this hire will help shape the foundation for the development of our prospects in Abbotsford,” Abbotsford General Manager Richard Seeley said in a statement. “Ryan has a unique talent for teaching and relating with players. His preparation both technically and tactically has led him to outstanding accomplishments at the junior level, as well as an impressive first season in the ECHL. His reputation as a communicator and someone who holds individuals and teams to high standards are the exact qualities we are looking for in the leader of our team.”
Papaioannou joins the Canucks organization after spending one season as the head coach of the Nailers. In his lone season with the Nailers, the ECHL team finished second in the Eastern Conference and fourth in the league with a record of 46–20–3–3 and 98 points.
During the 2026 ECHL post-season, Wheeling beat the Reading Royals by five games in the first round and took down the Maine Mariners in seven in the second, though they ultimately fell to the Florida Everblades in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Prior to his stint with Wheeling, Papaioannou served as both the General Manager and head coach of the Brooks Bandits in the BCHL/AJHL, occupying the dual role from 2008–09 to 2024–25. He collected five AJHL titles and one BCHL championship during this span of time. In his time with the Bandits, Papaioannou also coached Colorado Avalanche star Cale Makar.
Papaioannou will join new Abbotsford GM Richard Seeley in heading a new chapter for the AHL Canucks, as both are entering the roles vacated by Malhotra and longtime Abbotsford GM Ryan Johnson.
