The Abbotsford Canucks have signed Braden Birnie to a professional try-out agreement.
The Vancouver Canucks organization has acquired yet another free-agent, as the Abbotsford Canucks have signed forward Braden Birnie to a professional try-out agreement. The 24-year-old forward has been playing with the Rapid City Rush of the ECHL for the past nine games, putting up two goals and four assists in this span of time.
Prior to joining the Rush, Birnie spent four seasons with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks in the NCAA, captaining the team in 2024–25. Through a career total of 114 games at the NCAA-level, Birnie scored 16 goals and 31 assists. He hit a career-high in goals (7) and points (18) in 33 games in the NCAA this season.
Birnie is not the first signing the Canucks organization have made since the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline, as Abbotsford also signed forwards Austin Brimmer and Bennett Schimek to agreements. The organization also acquired forward Jayden Grubbe from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Josh Bloom.
Abbotsford will take part in two more home games on Friday, April 3, and Saturday, April 4 against the Coachella Valley Firebirds, before playing their last four games of the 2025–26 season on the road.
