Vancouver Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet said in a video posted by the Canucks that discussions for a possible contract extension haven't started.
When outright asked by members of the Canucks media, Tocchet said he hasn't spoken to GM Patrick Allvin or President of Hockey Ops Jim Rutherford about that topic.
"I have a great relationship with Patrik and Jim. I am not worried about it," Tocchet said.
Tocchet's first full season as the head coach of the Vancouver Canucks went exceptionally well and ended with him being named the winner of the Jack Adams Award.
Despite losing in the second round of the playoffs to the Edmonton Oilers, the Canucks season could be considered a success.
"I'm really, honestly, focused on this year," Tocchet said. "I think it is important that it will take care of itself down the road. I honestly don't think of that stuff."
Just like a player in the final year of their contract, the best move for success is for Tocchet not to think about what the future holds as much as he can. The Canucks will have added pressure on them next season to repeat or come close to repeating their success in the regular season.
"When there is the time to talk, we'll talk," Tocchet said. "Right now, it really is about me getting myself ready, recharging my battery, and getting ready for this upcoming year."
Given his relationships with the players and front-office staff, Tocchet's lack of concern for a contract extension should calm the team.
