Artūrs Šilovs went 5-5 for the Vancouver Canucks during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Vancouver Canucks have signed goaltender Artūrs Šilovs to a two-year contract extension worth $1.7 million. Šilovs, who played ten postseason games with the Canucks after both Thatcher Demko and Casey DeSmith went down with injuries during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, is projected to be the team's full-time backup starting next season. The deal, which carries an AAV of $850,000, will keep the 23-year-old in Vancouver until the end of the 2025-26 season.
After spending the majority of the season in the AHL with the Abbotsford Canucks, Šilovs stepped up during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. In ten postseason games, he went 5-5 with a goals-against average of 2.91 while leading the Canucks to Game 7 of the second round. Some of his most memorable moments from the playoff run include shutting out the Nashville Predators in Game 6 of the first round and making 42 saves in a 4-3 Game 3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in the second round.
In the press release, GM Patrik Allvin wrote, "Artūrs helped us out a lot when called upon last year as he continues to grow and develop as a goalie. We expect him to come into training camp and battle for a full-time position with the big club. Our group will continue to work with him to help sharpen his skills and provide him with all the tools necessary to take another step forward in his young career."
With Šilovs now signed, Vancouver has arguably one of the best goaltending tandems in the NHL. While the Latvian keeper does not have a ton of NHL experience, Šilovs has proved he can show up in big moments for both his club and country. Šilovs, who was the Canucks last restricted free agent, will once again be an RFA once the contract expires in 2026.
