The Vancouver Canucks will need to go head-to-head with the Grey Cup, which could create chaos in Downtown Vancouver.

When the 2024-25 NHL schedule, one Vancouver Canucks home date stood out. On November 17, the Canucks are scheduled to host the Nashville Predators at 5:00 pm P.T. While on the surface, this doesn't look like an issue, it will cause some chaos in Downtown Vancouver as the game will be going head-to-head with the 111th Grey Cup, which will be played next door at BC Place.
The 2024 Grey Cup is scheduled for 3:00 pm P.T. on November 17, with over 45,000 tickets already sold. If both venues sell out, which is possible, over 72,000 people will be gathered in the two neighbouring buildings, with both games projected to finish around the same time. Not only will this create a mess from a parking perspective, but it could also cause other problems due to the substantial amount of people in a small area.
On the NHL side, a 5:00 pm start time doesn't make sense for multiple reasons. The first is that Vancouver may not be able to sell out the game, as many will be opting to go to the Grey Cup, especially if the BC Lions are playing. The second is that Vancouver will be playing at home against the Chicago Blackhawks the night before at 7:00 pm P.T. This means that despite being the home team, The Canucks will be tired as they will have to play two games with start times less than 24 hours apart.
The NHL schedule is complicated to put together, but this is a significant oversight that will cause problems on November 17. While knowing the date of the Grey Cup may not be a priority for the schedule makers, missing that piece of information could lead to a chaotic Sunday in the city. Despite the events being over four months away, this is something that should be on fans' radars if they plan to attend either venue.
