First it was Lukas Reichel, now it’s David Kämpf. The Vancouver Canucks signed the former Toronto Maple Leafs center to a one-year, $1.1M contract after the forward cleared waivers with the purpose of terminating his four-year, $2.4M AAV contract. Kämpf was in year three of four of this contract but has now signed a new deal with the Canucks.
Kämpf, who is 30 years old, joins Vancouver after spending four seasons with the Maple Leafs. His most offensively-dominant season was 2022–23, during which he scored seven goals and 20 assists in all 82 games played while averaging 15:18 minutes played per game.
While the Canucks will likely not be relying on Kämpf to produce too much offence, he’ll be playing an important role in contributing to the team’s center depth. The forward has yet to play in an NHL game this season as he started the year with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL.
As Vancouver is currently icing a center pool of Elias Pettersson, Lukas Reichel, Aatu Räty, and Max Sasson, Kämpf will bring much-needed veteran presence down the middle of Vancouver’s lineup. Throughout eight seasons in the NHL, Kämpf has only registered a faceoff win percentage of less than 50% once — logging 45.32% in 2018–19. He’ll provide a significant boost to this Canucks team that has a current faceoff win rate of 45.8%.

Kämpf joins the Canucks as a result of injuries to Filip Chytil and Teddy Blueger, both of whom left Vancouver’s game on October 19 against the Washington Capitals due to injuries. While Blueger was seen skating with the team during practices, he did not travel with the team on their current three-game road trip.
