Vancouver Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet was asked about the Arizona Coyotes potential relocation ahead of tonight's game against the Yotes.
Tocchet played for the Coyotes from 1997 to 2000 and was also the franchise's head coach from 2017 to 2021.
"I played in 2000. We had some good teams and the buzz. It's there. It's too bad it has been so unstable. I think people are tired of the instability," Tocchet said. What better place to sell hockey? The players love it. It's a great lifestyle. It is a healthy lifestyle. They have great fans there if it's stable."
Today, reports have flooded about the possibility of the Coyotes franchise being sold and relocated to Salt Lake City.
All reports from Frank Seravalli, Pierre LeBrun, ESPN, and Elliotte Friedman suggest significant progress has been made regarding a plan to move the team, but nothing official has been conducted.
"I don't know what's going to happen. It would suck if they left," Tocchet said. "It would be a really great hockey market."
The Coyotes' status could be made official as soon as April 18, the day after their final regular-season game.
"The NHL and the Arizona Coyotes are preparing for the possibility of a move to Utah as soon as April 18, multiple sources confirmed Wednesday," Friedman wrote.
The Coyotes just released renderings of what they would build should they win their land auction in June. However, the Coyotes' participation in the auction could be nullified if there is an official announcement on April 18.
Seravalli reports that a "verbal" agreement has been put in place. He says the framework of an agreement "that I'd say most of it has been agreed to," Seravalli said.
The situation is very fluid, and more updates will be provided quickly as more information is reported.
