Felton is a 24-year-old defenceman who recently concluded his season with the Merrimack College Warriors of the NCAA.
The Vancouver Canucks added to their prospect pool on Thursday night, signing undrafted free agent Christian Felton. The 24-year-old right-shot defenceman played 26 games for the Merrimack College Warriors, which is part of the Hockey East Conference of the NCAA. He led his team with 55 blocked shots while only recording four penalty minutes during the season.
As general manager Patrik Allvin mentioned in the team's press release, Felton was invited to the Canucks summer development camp this past year. He was one of 15 defencemen at the camp but was the only defender who wasn't signed or drafted by the team. He now joins Drew Bavaro (BOS) as the only NCAA free agent to sign entry-level contracts this month.
Felton does have some experience playing in BC, as he was part of the 2019-20 Vernon Vipers. In 50 games, the Medina, Ohio-born defender had five goals and 15 points while adding one assist in five playoff games. During his junior career, he also saw time at the USHL level with the Madison Capitals and in the USHS-Prep league, where he was the captain of the Kimball Union Academy during the 2018-19 season.
After playing one year at Bentley University, Felton moved to Merrimack College for the 2021-22 season. During his three years with the Warriors, he played 85 games, recording 17 points and blocking 148 shots. He is projected to be assigned to the Abbotsford Canucks where he can learn the Canucks system and potentially get into some games at the AHL level before the end of the regular season.
