Boeser established a new career high in goals, scoring his 30th of the season against the Blue Jackets.
What a way to head into the All-Star break. After trailing 4-1 heading into the third period, the Vancouver Canucks (33-11-5) pulled off a thrilling comeback to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets (15-23-10) 5-4 in overtime. All eyes were on Brock Boeser as not only did he score a hat trick and set up Elias Pettersson's overtime winner, but he reached the 30-goal plateau for the first time in his career. With the victory, the Canucks pick up their second win of the season when trailing after two periods while recording their fifth game with three or more power-play goals.
There were quite a few positives to take away from this game. The power play looked unstoppable, going three for four on the night, while Vancouver once again put forward a strong effort in the third, coming all the way back from a three-goal deficit. While it wasn't a perfect game, the Canucks showed why their offence is one of the most dangerous in the league, as they scored five goals for the 18th time this season.
One area of Vancouver's game that saved them tonight was their penalty kill. While they did allow a goal against, the Canucks pulled off close to a perfect penalty kill late in the third as Tyler Myers was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct with just over eight minutes to go. While there are some questions on whether or not the penalty should have happened as it was missed on the ice initially and later called with the help of review (which is not something refs can do as per the NHL rule book), Vancouver's penalty killers stepped up in a big way, helping them secure the win and push their point streak to 11 games.
Here is what Ian Cole had to say postgame:
"We didn't love our second period. We didn't love them getting that momentum there for that stretch. But then, being able to reset and comeback. Our power play stepping up huge, and our PK unit doing a great job there at the end. Winning one in overtime is great, so being able to get not just a point but then two points out of that game, in the situation we were in, was really, really good."
