The 2024 trade deadline is less than two months away, and rumours are swirling around the Vancouver Canucks. The organization is amid one of its best seasons and may be looking to add key pieces ahead of a potential Stanley Cup run. One of the players they may be looking at is former Canucks defenceman Chris Tanev who spent ten seasons in Vancouver before heading to Calgary in the 2020 offseason.

According to Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie and Dhali, Canucks captain Quinn Hughes has discussed the possibility of the organization trading for Tanev. While discussing potential trade candidates, Dhaliwal said:

"Chirs Tanev is an interesting one for me, Donnie. The tremendous respect for Tanev in the Vancouver organization. Top to bottom, everybody loves the guy. You know Quinn Hughes loves him. Quinn Hughes has gone to bat for him this year, you know, and told management Tanev is a guy you should target."

Dhaliwal also mentioned that Vancouver would be at the top of his list if Tanev becomes a free agent after this season. Now 34, the right shot defenceman is in the final year of the four-year, $18 million contract he signed back in 2020. In 44 games this season, Tanev leads the Flames in blocked shots with 128 and is averaging 19:28 of ice time.

According to Natural Stat Trick, Hughes and Tanev played 724:39 of even-strength ice time during their 68 games together. During that time, they had an xGF% of 49.43 and a GF% of 46.03. They also played over 200 minutes together in 17 games during the 2020 playoffs, with the Canucks outscoring their opposition 10-7 when the two were on the ice.

Tanev also showed he had chemistry with Nikita Zadorv, who Vancouver acquired from Calgary earlier this season. Before the 2023-24 campaign, the two had played together in 139 games while recording 225:02 of ice time at even strength. During that time, they had an xGF% of 58.17 while the Flames outscored their opposition 12-8. The two also had some success this season, as in 27:51 of even-strength ice time together, they recorded an xGF% of 61.29 while limiting the opposition to five high-danger chances.
