Whether through injuries or strong play at the AHL level, players will be called up from the Abbotsford Canucks throughout their year, leading to some NHL debuts. Here is a look at four players who could play their first NHL games with Vancouver this season.
Jonathan Lekkerimäki
The question with Jonathan Lekkerimäki is not if but when he makes his NHL debut this season. After a phenomenal campaign that saw him win SHL Rookie of the Year, Young Player of the Year and be named World Juniors MVP, the Canucks 2022 first-rounder is expected to start the season in the AHL but should finish the year on the NHL roster. With a goal and assists in six games last season with Abbotsford, Lekkerimäki is sure to create some memorable moments in 2024-25.
Jett Woo
Now that he is entering his fifth AHL season with the organization, it feels like this may be the year Jett Woo gets to play in an NHL game. The right-shot defender will be 24 when the season starts and while he did get called up last year, never dressed in a game. Having re-signed with the Canucks this offseason, it is clear that the organization sees potential in him, which could translate to another call-up during the season.
Max Sasson
Max Sasson burst onto the scene last year in Abbotsford, recording 42 points in 56 games as the rookie. Another player who will turn 24 before the season starts, Sasson, could be a call-up option this season thanks to his ability to play center. While he has only been in the organization for a little over a year, he has been very impressive so far and has the potential to develop into an everyday NHLer.
Elias Pettersson
Based on GM Patrik Allvin's comments, the organization is very high on defenceman Elias Pettersson. Set to play next season in the AHL, Allvin mentioned Pettersson by name when asked about younger players making a push for roster spots. While it may take some time, if Pettersson shows that he can be productive at the AHL level, he could be a player the organization calls up at some point this season.
