Vancouver Canucks defenseman Carson Soucy has had a roller coaster of a season due to injury. With the games becoming more intense, he feels the team's commitment is crucial for the playoffs.
Soucy has been limited to just 30 games this season. He has been a solid physical presence on the blue line for the Canucks, and despite his injuries, he won't change his game.
"I don't think so. I mean, it's unfortunate that they happened so close together," Soucy said. "But no, you can't really change your game. That's just hockey. I mean, injuries are going to happen. You kind of just got to play through."
Soucy might not have the offensive numbers that Quinn Hughes puts up, but the Canucks play better with him in the lineup.
His physical playstyle should benefit the Canucks heading into the postseason. The games are getting more tightly checked and intense.
"I think that's kind of to be expected—just more intense games. Everyone's fighting for points down the stretch," he said. "[Physicality is] just going to continue to ramp up, especially in the playoffs, that first round. That's like the best part of it. Knowing that it is playoffs and knowing that the physicality ramps up."
Soucy also talked about the team's commitment all over the ice. He feels that without that buy-in, the team wouldn't be remotely close to where they are in the standings.
"There's a lot of skill with Hughes, [and the] top nine forwards, but there's also just a big commitment to playing a team game," Soucy said. "I think that's why we've had lots of success."
Soucy and partner Ian Cole will be tasked with shutting down top players in the playoffs with physical play. Given their lack of playoff experience, their commitment to the defensive end needs to be an example for the rest of the team.
"I think, just as a d-man group, we do a good job this year surfing in. I think my gaps have been kind of the best they've been in my career," Soucy said. "I think just working on the skating, but also with this group, we just kind of surf up. We're always kind of in the opponent's face."
