Welcome back to another Vancouver Canucks 2024–25 report card. Today, we’ll be looking at the third defenceman of the series, Filip Hronek. As one of the team’s top-pairing defencemen alongside Quinn Hughes, Hronek was faced with time as the team’s number-one during Hughes’ injuries this season and stepped up significantly.

Injuries impacted Hronek throughout the season, both to himself and to other members of the team. Vancouver’s D-core faced injuries throughout virtually the entire season, with Hronek missing eight weeks from the end of November to mid-January due to both upper and lower-body injuries. This particular absence lasted a total of 21 games. Prior to this, he had one goal and eight assists in 21 games played, with most of his points coming in the back-half of the season after he returned.

As well as being injured himself, injuries to the rest of the Canucks’ blueline also impacted Hronek’s deployment. Superstar defenceman and Canucks captain Hughes missed a total of 14 games during the 2024–25 season, 10 of which came after Hronek was back in the lineup. Because of this, Hronek ended up needing to fill many of Hughes’ minutes. During a six-game Hughes-less stretch in February, Hronek led the team in minutes played with 176:58. Later on, during four games in March without Hughes in the lineup, he played a team-high 146:18.

With Hughes out of the lineup in March, Hronek rose up to the occasion offensively speaking as well, putting up a goal and five assists in this span of time. He also went on a four-game point streak towards the end of the season, tallying a goal and four assists against the Anaheim Ducks, Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, and Colorado Avalanche. Hronek finished the season with five goals and 28 assists in 61 games played in 2024–25.

Hronek also accomplished something that almost never happens, especially in the 2024–25 season — he won a faceoff in overtime. This came during the team’s unpredictable 6–5 comeback win against the Stars on April 8. Hronek had two assists in this effort, helping out on the 5–4 and 5–5 goals scored by former Canuck Pius Suter. This was one of seven multi-point games he registered this season, with the others coming against the Ducks, Avalanche, Washington Capitals, Toronto Maple Leafs, Minnesota Wild, and Montréal Canadiens

While this season was difficult to navigate, not just for Hronek personally but for the rest of the team as well, the defenceman still managed to do so while also dealing with multiple injuries and filling in different roles when needed. He was even able to produce at a similar rate to Hughes when the Canucks captain was out of the lineup, as well as eat up his minutes while still performing well defensively. As a result, Hronek’s 2024–25 season will be given a B+.
