Alex Pietrangelo has been named the Golden Knights nominee for the 2023-24 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is handed out to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication. It is voted on by members of each chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA). One player is appointed as a nominee for each of the 32 teams.
Below is the bio the Vegas chapter submitted to the PWHA:
"Pietrangelo has remained a constant professional and veteran presence for the Golden Knights throughout his tenure in Vegas, though he wasn’t for a time last season. He took a leave of absence to care for his sick 5-year-old daughter Evelyn, returning only once she returned to health. There were even points where he contemplated retirement to be with his family, but he eventually returned to help Vegas to its first Stanley Cup championship, and Pietrangelo’s second, then played in his 1,000th NHL game this season".
This season Pietrangelo has played in 64 games scoring four goals and 33 points. He recently missed six games due to an illness.
The previous nominees for the Golden Knights were Brad Hunt, Ryan Carpenter, Shea Theodore, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jack Eichel and Phil Kessel. No Golden Knight has ever won the award.
Pietrangelo is 34 years old, a two-time Stanley Cup winner and a beloved teammate. Coaches have only ever said good things about him and his teammates rave about his leadership and character. Pietrangelo is a worthy nominee and deserving of the recognition.
