The Tampa Bay Lightning and Minnesota Wild made a minor, one-for-one trade on Sunday, Dec. 28, which featured a former OHL all-star.
Former Sault Ste. Marie Greyhound forward Boris Katchouk was traded by the Lightning to the Wild in exchange for Michael Milne, a former WHL star during the 2021-22 season.
Katchouk, 27, had three strong seasons in the Soo, highlighted by his 2017-18 season. The Greyhounds put forth one of the best seasons in OHL history, finishing with a 55-7-6 record. They had a +131 goal differential, recording over 300 goals, and Katchouk had a play into that.
Morgan Frost was the offensive orchestrator for the Greyhounds that season, leading the team in goals with 42. However, he wasn’t alone in the goal department. Katchouk tied him in tucks with 42 and finished the season with 85 points in 58 games. He was named to the OHL’s First All-Star Team and carried over his strong regular season into the playoffs.
In the 2018 playoffs, Katchouk led the league in goals (19) and points (37). Sault Ste. Marie fans remember his dominance and clutch goal-scoring ability during their run to the OHL Finals. The Greyhounds ran into a Hamilton Bulldogs squad led by Robert Thomas, losing the Championship Series in six games. It was an incredibly close series. No team won a game by three or more goals; four of the six games were decided by one goal.
Katchouk also represented Canada at the 2018 World Junior Championship that season, capturing a gold medal.
Drafted 44th overall by Tampa Bay in 2016, he returned to their organization this summer, signing a one-year deal on July 1. This marks the second time the Lightning have traded Katchouk. He was moved along with his Greyhound teammate, Taylor Raddysh, as part of the package that the Chicago Blackhawks got for Brandon Hagel.
Katchouk has over 400 games of experience playing in the AHL (261) and NHL (179). If he suits up in a game for Minnesota, it will be the fourth NHL franchise the 27-year-old has played for.
