Ryan Roobroeck and Matthew Schaefer headline OHL players invited to Hockey Canada's summer camp
16 OHL players have been invited to attend Canada’s National Men’s Summer U18 Team Selection Camp to represent Team Canada at the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
The selection camp will be held at the WinSport Event Centre in Calgary from July 27 to 30. The 41 players invited will be split into two teams, one red and one black, and play each other twice on July 29 and 30.
The Hlinka Gretzky Cup will be played in Edmonton, Alberta from Aug. 5 to 10. Matthew Schaefer and Jack Ivankovic won gold at the 2024 IIHF U18 Men’s World Championship with Canada earlier this year and should be seen as locks to make Canada’s Hlinka team.
Michael Misa was invited to the camp but is unable to attend due to his recovery from some ailments he was dealing with during Saginaw's Memorial Cup run. Misa won gold at the 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup recording eight points in five games.
10 of the 11 first picks in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection will be attending the camp. The lone player who didn’t receive an invite was sixth overall pick and Oshawa Generals forward Owen Griffin, a surprising non-invite.
Niagara IceDogs winger Ryan Roobroeck, who set a franchise rookie point record, and the OHL’s Rookie of the Year Jake O’Brien, are another two OHL players who should be considered as locks to make the Canadian team.
The Kitchener Rangers had three of their 2023-24 rookies invited, leading the way amongst all OHL teams.
