The 17-year-old centre will join Merrimack College following his QMJHL career.

It's been a pretty exciting week for Simon-Xavier Cyr.

Firstly, he scored the overtime winner over Val-d'Or on Wednesday, and now has announced a future step in his hockey journey.

The Sherbrooke native posted a commitment to the NCAA's Merrimack College on his Instagram Friday afternoon.

The 6-foot-2 centre has 20 (9+11) points in 56 games in his sophomore QMJHL season, and is a prospect eligible for the 2026 NHL draft. NHL Central Scouting has him as the 186th-ranked North American skater.

Cyr was the 14th overall pick by Gatineau in the 2024 QMJHL draft, and while he hasn't found the offensive touch at the major junior level yet to be a true star at this level yet, he's proven to be a responsible two-way centre for a struggling Gatineau side.

At Merrimack, he'll meet fellow QMJHL commits Simon-Pier Brunet, Alex Mercier, C.J. Watroba and Brenden Espinell, as well as former Sherbrooke goalie Linards Feldbergs.

It's not immediately clear if this commitment is for the 2026-27 campaign or further down the road, but nonetheless he'll be arriving at Merrimack following his QMJHL career.
