The WHL is set to play a big role in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Leading up to the draft, we at The Hockey News will be profiling some of the players who are projected to hear their names called at the end of June. Today's prospect is center Braeden Cootes, who plays for the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Cootes is one of the top two-way centers available in this year's draft. The Thunderbirds captain set new career highs in goals (26) and points (63) while helping lead Seattle back to the post-season. Cootes also captained Canada to a Gold Medal at the 2025 U18s, recording six goals and 12 points in seven games.

What makes Cootes such an intriguing prospect is his commitment to defence. He is usually the first forward to get back defensively and excels at creating turnovers. Cootes has also developed into a strong penalty killer as he can break up entries as well as win board battles at a consistent rate.

As for the offensive zone, Cootes thrives as a play driver. He has great vision, which allows him to hit teammates in scoring positions with accurate passes. Cootes is also always in motion, which enables him to change angles and find open ice in order to create chances.

The next step in Cootes' development will be utilizing his shot more often. While he did score 26 goals, there were times when he would pass up a shot in order to get the puck to a teammate. If he can increase his average shots per game, he will become an even bigger offensive threat in the WHL next season.

Cootes is projected to be a top-20 pick heading into the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. He is a hardworking, right-shot center who has the potential to be a top-six forward at the NHL level. One of the best two-way centers currently in the WHL, Cootes is a can't-miss prospect who would be a great addition to any organization's prospect pool.
