The WHL is set to play a big role in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Leading up to the draft, we at The Hockey News will be profiling some of the players who are projected to hear their names called at the end of June. Today's prospect is defenceman Radim Mrtka, who plays for the Seattle Thunderbirds.
Mrtka made an immediate impact when he joined Seattle at the end of November. Listed at 6'6", 218 lbs, the right-shot defender recorded 32 assists and 35 points in 43 regular season games. Mrtka also had a strong playoffs, posting three assists and four penalty minutes in six games.
What makes Mrtka such an intriguing prospect is his size. He can outmuscle his opposition for loose pucks and can clear the front of his net with ease. Mrtka also threw some massive hits this year, which, unsurprisingly, separated his opposition from the puck.
As the season progressed, Mrtka was able to showcase how strong his offensive game has become. He is excellent in the transition game, with one of his strengths being carried zone entries. A difficult player to knock off the puck, Mrtka's ability to find teammates in scoring positions is yet another reason why he will hear his name called early in the draft.
The next step in Mrtka's development will be using his shot more consistently. While he can beat goaltenders from distance, he only managed 59 shots during his 43 regular season games. If Mrtka can become a volume shooter from the point, it will help him become a more complete player at the pro level.
Based on his skill set and attributes, Mrtka could be the first WHL player taken is this year's draft. He is a threat in all three zones and has the physical profile teams are always craving. In the end, Mrtka shouldn't have to wait long to hear his name called at the end of June.
