The 2025 NHL draft lottery is scheduled for Monday, May 5, when we will know which team has the top pick in June.
The lottery takes place at the NHL Network studio in Secaucus, N.J., with ESPN, Sportsnet and TVA Sports broadcasting the event. The specific time of the lottery on May 5 should be announced later this week.
NHL teams that did not qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs, or the squads that have the first-round pick of a team that missed the post-season, are eligible to win the draft lottery.
Not all teams that win the draft lottery will receive the first overall pick. Teams that win the lottery will move up 10 selections at most, meaning the top 11 of 16 seeds are eligible to receive the No. 1 pick.
The lottery has two phases. The first draw determines which team chooses first overall, and the second determines who picks second overall.
If the 12th to 16th seeds win the first draw, then the last-place San Jose Sharks will have the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL draft. The Chicago Blackhawks would have the second overall selection if the team that wins the second draw doesn't pass them in the order.
Here are the odds of winning the first lottery draw (and the odds of winning the first overall pick in parentheses). The teams are sorted in reverse order of the overall NHL standings. The odds of the second draw will increase on a proportionate basis based on the results of the first draw.
San Jose Sharks: 18.5 percent odds of winning the first lottery draw (25.5 percent odds of receiving the first overall pick):
Chicago Blackhawks: 13.5 percent (13.5 percent)
Nashville Predators: 11.5 percent (11.5 percent)
Philadelphia Flyers: 9.5 percent (9.5 percent)
Boston Bruins: 8.5 percent (8.5 percent)
Seattle Kraken: 7.5 percent (7.5 percent)
Buffalo Sabres: 6.5 percent (6.5 percent)
Anaheim Ducks: 6.0 percent (6.0 percent)
Pittsburgh Penguins: 5.0 percent (5.0 percent)
New York Islanders: 3.5 percent (3.5 percent)
New York Rangers (Rangers traded this pick to Vancouver, which traded the pick to Pittsburgh. If the pick lands in the top 13, the Rangers can choose to keep it): 3.0 percent (3.0 percent)
Detroit Red Wings: 2.5 percent (0 percent)
Columbus Blue Jackets: 2.0 percent (0 percent)
Utah Hockey Club: 1.5 percent (0 percent)
Vancouver Canucks: 0.5 percent (0 percent)
Calgary Flames (if their first-rounder becomes a top-10 pick, they will transfer Florida's first-round selection to the Montreal Canadiens. Otherwise, Calgary's first-rounder will transfer to Montreal): 0.5 percent (0.0 percent)
