With Igor Shesterkin out for the season and Joonas Korpisalo out for the next few weeks, the New York Rangers have turned to veteran goaltender James Reimer for some insurance between the pipes.

The New York Rangers are turning to a journeyman netminder for some depth between the pipes after being decimated by injuries.

The Rangers' AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, have signed veteran goaltender James Reimer to a professional tryout agreement, the team announced on Thursday.

Reimer appeared in 14 games with the Ottawa Senators during the 2025-26 season, putting together a 7-4-2 record with a .886 save percentage, 2.42 goals against average, and one shutout.

The 38-year-old has suited up for 539 NHL games across 16 seasons with the Senators, Buffalo Sabres, Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, and Toronto Maple Leafs.

This news comes after the Rangers were dealt some bad news regarding goaltending injuries. Vezina Trophy winner Igor Shesterkin is out for the entire season after sustaining a lower-body injury last week, while backup Joonas Korpisalo remains week-to-week with a lower-body injury of his own.

Dylan Garand and Spencer Martin are the current tandem for the Rangers, with Reimer presumably serving as a tertiary option in Korpisalo's absence.

Garand has posted an impressive 3-1-0 record with a .951 save percentage, a 1.15 goals-against average, and a shutout. The 24-year-old was previously placed on waivers for purpose of being assigned to the AHL on Sept. 27, less than two weeks before Shesterkin was officially ruled out for the season.

Garand has been a big part of the Rangers' strong start to the season. The team has put together a 6-2-0 record with a plus-13 goal differential, sitting second in the Metropolitan Division behind only the defending Stanley Cup champions in the Carolina Hurricanes.
