The Bruins did well adding this defenseman to their group.

Jake DeBrusk and Charlie Coyle were The Hockey News picks for the mid-season Selke Trophy.

The Boston Bruins picked up a big 3-2 shootout win over the Washington Capitals last night. Bruins veteran defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk was the hero for Boston, scoring the shootout winner with a perfectly placed snipe.

This is only the latest example of how Shattenkirk has been a solid signing for the Bruins. The veteran defenseman inked a cheap one-year, $1.05 million contract with the Bruins this past offseason and has lived up to expectations.

Shattenkirk, 35, was brought in to provide more depth and offense to the Bruins' blue line, and it's fair to say that he's done just that. In 57 games, the New York native has five goals to go along with 22 points. That's not bad production from a blue liner making just over $1 million.

Along with providing Boston with a bit more production, Shattenkirk has also been a solid veteran presence for the Bruins. The 2007 first-round pick has played in nearly 1,000 NHL games, and a playoff club having that kind of experience on its roster is never a bad thing.

Ultimately, Shattenkirk is a nice bonus for the Bruins to have around, even if he ends up being more of a depth defenseman down the stretch. Let's see how the right-shot defender finishes off the campaign from here.
