The Boston Bruins should be aggressively looking to improve their forward group this off-season. It is no secret that adding a top-six winger should be one of their top priorities, as they notably traded former captain Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers at the 2025 NHL trade deadline.
Due to the Bruins' need for a top-six winger, Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers is one pending unrestricted free agent who has been viewed as a potential target if he becomes a free agent this summer. Now, a big update has been provided on Ehlers' future in Winnipeg.
During a recent episode of The Chris Johnston Show, the NHL insider reported that it's likely Ehlers will become a free agent on July 1.
"I think he's likely... going to hit the market," Johnston said. "The Jets had said that they want to make him a Jet for life, but I think it's a pretty appealing possibility for him to go elsewhere."
If Ehlers is, in fact, available on July 1, the Bruins would be crazy not to make a serious push for him. He would be an outstanding addition to their top six and could also make some real magic playing with Bruins superstar David Pastrnak. In addition, the Bruins are entering the summer with plenty of cap space to work with, so they could afford Ehlers.
Ehlers, 29, recorded 24 goals, 63 points, and a plus-14 rating in 69 regular-season games this season with the Jets. He also had five goals, seven points, and a plus-1 rating in eight playoff games this year for Winnipeg.
