With training camp here, several Boston Bruins players are looking to impress and earn a spot on the club's opening night roster. Bruins rising star Matthew Poitras is among the many youngsters looking to make the NHL squad.
It is hard to bet against Poitras, as he showed last season that he can undoubtedly handle NHL competition. After being the Bruins' top star during the preseason, the 20-year-old not only made the opening night roster but also provided solid secondary offensive production. In 33 games with the Bruins last season, he has five goals, 15 points, and a plus-4 rating. Unfortunately, shoulder surgery ended in February.
However, now that Poitras is fully healthy, he is looking to impress yet again at this year's training camp. While speaking with reporters, Poitras had a big message for management when asked about the idea of him starting the season with the Providence Bruins.
Here's what Poitras said on the matter: "I want to be here. I want to be able to show that I belong here and that they don’t really have a choice. You gotta keep me here.”
It is certainly good to hear Poitras is hungry to secure an NHL spot again. When looking at the Bruins' lineup, he certainly has a good chance, too. They lost multiple forwards this offseason, so there are spots to fight for in their lineup. In addition, the Bruins are clearly giving him a chance to, as they have had him play both center and right wing at camp thus far.
