The Bruins should consider keeping Jake DeBrusk around.

The Bruins should consider keeping Jake DeBrusk around.

Leading up to the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, Boston Bruins forward Jake DeBrusk was a popular player in the rumor mill. His pending UFA status and the Bruins' limited cap space were the main reasons behind it. However, the 2015 first-round pick ended up staying put, and it's a decision that the Bruins absolutely are not regretting.

DeBrusk, 27, has been playing his best hockey of the season, posting four goals and nine points over his last seven contests. He has shown clear signs of last season's form, and no longer feeling the pressure as a trade candidate is likely a notable reason for it.

With DeBrusk starting to play at his highest level, the Bruins management should consider signing him to a contract extension. He is starting to form stronger chemistry with Brad Marchand and Charlie Coyle, and keeping him around in their top six beyond this season may be wise because of it.

DeBrusk has blossomed as a part of the Bruins' core, and letting him walk for nothing would come with some risks. As a result, the Bruins should consider extending him beyond this season. This is especially true if he maintains his excellent recent play for the remainder of the campaign.

In 67 games this season, DeBrusk has 17 goals, 36 points, and a plus-13 rating.
