This former Bruin has been playing wonderfully for the Hurricanes.
Before the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline passed, the Bruins made a major splash, acquiring both defenseman Dmitry Orlov and forward Garnet Hathaway from the Washington Capitals. Orlov was quite impactful for Boston following the move, posting four goals and 17 points in 23 games. He then followed that up by getting eight assists in seven playoff games.
After proving to be an outstanding fit in the Bruins' top four, Orlov was a player that many fans wished that the Original Six club could keep in Boston. However, their cap space trouble made that impossible, and the skilled defenseman signed with the Carolina Hurricanes this offseason.
Now, fast-forward to March, and Orlov has had a nice season for the Hurricanes. In 68 games, he has five goals, 24 points, 102 hits, and a plus-5 rating. Overall, he has continued to be a steady and hard-nosed defenseman in Carolina, but what's more encouraging is that he is now starting to heat up offensively.
Orlov, 32, has been dominant for the Hurricanes lately, posting two goals and six points over his last three games. Along with that, in his last game against the Ottawa Senators, he had two goals and four points.
There's no question that Orlov is a big difference-maker, as he plays strong defensively, isn't afraid to throw the body around, and is a threat offensively. Right now, the offense is coming back for him, and that is certainly tough news for the rest of the league. Let's see how long he can keep this up.
