This former Boston Bruins forward has been placed on waivers.
Teams are continuing to finalize their rosters as their season-openers approach. The NHL recently saw 25 players hit the waiver wire, with three of them — Michael DiPietro, Vinni Lettieri, and Jordan Oesterle — being current Boston Bruins.
However, a former Bruin is also on waivers, as Joona Koppanen was made available for the taking by the Pittsburgh Penguins. If he clears, he will start the season with their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
The Bruins selected Koppanen as the 135th overall pick of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-foot-5 forward appeared in five NHL games with the Bruins in 2022-23, posting one assist, eight hits, and four penalty minutes.
Koppanen spent the majority of his time with the Bruins organization down in the AHL with the Providence Bruins. In 245 games over six seasons with Providence, he had 39 goals and 93 points.
Koppanen's time with the Bruins ended when he signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Penguins during the 2023 off-season. In four games for Pittsburgh last season, he had zero points. He also had six goals and 21 points in 58 games for Wilkes/Barre-Scranton.
