On March 7, the Boston Bruins traded Charlie Coyle and a 2026 fifth-round pick to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Casey Mittelstadt, Will Zellers, and 2025 second-round pick. Overall, while it undoubtedly was tough to see a longtime Bruin like Coyle go, they got a solid return for the Weymouth, Massachusetts native.
The Avalanche paying that much to get Coyle is also understandable. They are in win-now mode, and bringing in Coyle gives them an impactful two-way center with plenty of playoff experience for their 3C role.
Coyle certainly made an immediate impact in his first game with the Avalanche on March 8 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. With the Avalanche down 4-3 in the third period, Coyle made a perfect pass behind the net to Jonathan Drouin before the latter one-timed it home to tie it up. This goal was the first of four third-period goals for the Avalanche, leading to their 7-4 win.
When playing at his best, Coyle is capable of setting up offense, and the Avalanche got their first look of that. With this assist, Coyle now has 23 points in 65 games on the year. It will be interesting to see how much Coyle can build on his strong first game as an Av from here.
