With NHL training camps starting this week, most players who hit the free-agent market this summer have been signed to a contract or a professional tryout (PTO) agreement. While this is the case, there are still some interesting players who are looking for a new home this late into September.

Former Boston Bruins defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk is among the most notable, and it seems quite possible that this could change shortly.

Shattenkirk, 35, is easily one of the best defenders left in free agency, so the prospect of him landing at least a PTO is undoubtedly there. The veteran defenseman showed this past season with the Bruins that he can still provide decent offense from the point, posting six goals and 24 points in 61 games. Thus, in a depth role, he could be a solid addition to a club that needs more help on the blueline.

Earlier this month, Shattenkirk's agent, George Bazos, told NHL insider Pierre LeBrun that the right-shot defender has had discussions with a few teams. However, at this juncture, he has yet to get a PTO or contract.

With PTOs being signed far more regularly at this stage of the offseason, it will be interesting to see if Shattenkirk gets one soon. Teams looking a boost on the right side could take a shot on him, but time will tell if that does, in fact, come to fruition.
