The Bruins have made things harder on themselves.
The Boston Bruins had a golden opportunity to end their series against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 5. The odds were on their side, as they were at TD Garden, and Auston Matthews did not play. However, instead of taking advantage of this opportunity, they completely squandered it.
The Bruins put together an underwhelming performance against the Maple Leafs in Game 5. However, despite their uninspiring play, they managed to be in until the end before losing in overtime by a 2-1 final score.
With this loss, the Bruins are in a worse spot than they were. While they are up 3-2 in the series, clinching the series on the road will be an incredibly difficult task. While the Bruins won each of their two road games this season, momentum is clearly on Toronto's side. Thus, Boston must pick up their play immensely if they hope to win.
A loss in Game 6 would be very concerning, as the Bruins will be forced to play a 'win or go home' Game 7. That would be far from ideal.
Last night's loss felt eerily similar to their Game 5 loss against the Florida Panthers last year. They had the chance to end their series at home but lost in overtime. We all know what happened from there.
The Bruins must now move on from this brutal loss and try to win Game 6 on the road. If they don't, they will be in danger of another epic collapse for the second year in a row.
