After performing far below expectations, the Boston Bruins traded several of their former key players at the 2025 NHL trade deadline. This included Brandon Carlo, as the Bruins traded the right-shot defenseman to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a 2026 first-round pick, a 2025 fourth-round pick, and forward Fraser Minten.
This trade was a significant one for the Bruins, as Carlo had been an extremely important part of their blueline since his NHL debut in 2016-17. Now, one of the Bruins' top objectives this off-season should be to find a replacement for Carlo for their second pairing on the right side.
While trading Carlo was undoubtedly risky for the Bruins, especially with the Maple Leafs being one of their biggest rivals, this move has a real shot of being a win for the Bruins as it ages.
Although the Maple Leafs are expected to be among the top clubs in the NHL next season, the Bruins getting a first-round pick from them for Carlo was big. It is no secret that the Bruins have one of the weakest prospect pools in the NHL, so they need all of the first-rounders they can get. Now, the Bruins will have a good chance to land a promising prospect with this pick, even if it ends up being later in the first round.
While the Bruins have a chance to land a good prospect with Toronto's first-rounder, they also already got one in Minten from this deal. Minten has all the tools to blossom into a key part of the Bruins' forward group, and it's a massive plus that he's a center. This is, of course, a position the Bruins desperately need to improve, and Minten could provide them with an answer.
Minten has generated plenty of praise for his smart two-way play, and there is hope that he can become one of the Bruins' top centers later down the road because of it. This would certainly make the return they received for Carlo very good.
Minten, 20, showed promise this season at the AHL level, posting nine goals and 20 points in 37 games split between the Toronto Marlies and Providence Bruins. He also played in 21 games split between the two Original Six clubs, recording three goals, five points, and 48 hits. Overall, he still has more developing to do before becoming a high-impact NHL forward, but it is hard not to feel optimistic about his future.
Nevertheless, it is going to be fascinating to see how this deal ages for the Bruins. There is no question that the Bruins moved on from a talented shutdown defenseman in Carlo, but there is reason to believe that this deal could benefit Boston in the long run, big time.
