The Sabres may get another chance to try to land their longtime target.
Before Patrick Kane signed with the Detroit Red Wings, the Buffalo Sabres were one of the clubs heavily linked to him. It is not a secret that the Buffalo native has long been a dream target for the Sabres, but they, unfortunately, missed out on him once he finally became available.
Yet, based on a recent report, the Sabres may get another chance to try to convince Kane to head home.
In a recent article for The Athletic, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun said he believes that "it's more likely that Kane goes to market on July 1." However, he also said he believes that Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman and Kane's agent, Pat Brisson, will chat over the next few weeks about a possible deal.
If Kane hits the market, he will likely be one of the Sabres' top targets again. It is not a secret that they need a top-six scoring winger, and Kane would give them that. The future Hall of Famer had an excellent season with Detroit, recording 20 goals and 47 points in 50 games.
If the Sabres added Kane, he would be a solid addition to their first line and could make some real magic with star center Tage Thompson. In addition, he would immediately become one of their biggest threats on the power play.
We must wait and see what happens with Kane and the Red Wings from here. If a deal does not occur between the superstar and Original Six club, expect Buffalo to pursue him again.
