Fresh off a Stanley Cup victory, the Hurricanes pursued the Ottawa captain, signaling a relentless drive to bolster their championship roster with elite, high-impact talent.
The Brady Tkachuk deal shocked the hockey world on Sunday, as the Olympic gold medalist ended up joining joined his brother, Matthew, down in Florida following a blockbuster trade.
The Ottawa Senators captain had apparently requested a trade out of Canada's capital soon after being swept by the Carolina Hurricanes and not long after the 2025-26 season came to a close, he was dealt for a large package of picks.
Tkachuk, who has two years remaining on his deal, had a full no-movement clause in his contract and so he could stipulate which teams he would accept a trade to.
Supposedly, those teams included the Florida Panthers, where he eventually was traded, the Minnesota Wild and the Vegas Golden Knights, who each feature multiple of his Team USA teammates, and the Hurricanes.
According to TSN insider Pierre LeBrun, Carolina had conversations with the Senators on a potential Tkachuk deal as well, so things could have gotten interesting to say the least.
The timeline for discussions would have been right in the midst of the team's Stanley Cup Championship run, which shows that even though the Hurricanes summited the mountain, they're not satisfied with just one more title.
It's clear that the team wants as many as they can get and they'll do whatever it takes to keep improving the team.
Tkachuk, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2018 draft, is one of the league's top power forwards and a physically dominant player as well and he certainly would have boosted the Canes' lineup.
Ultimately, Tkachuk's goal was to join his brother in Florida, so there's no guarantee that he would have accepted a trade to the Hurricanes, but him and his brother have talked well about the organization, the team and the fanbase before on their podcast.
"I know from experience, that was the toughest team I played against this year," Tkachuk said on the Wingmen podcast.
Overall, it's still promising to see Carolina as a preferred destination top-end players and that the front office is working to make those kinds of deals happen.
