Swedish blueliner William Hakansson brings a physical, rangy presence to Carolina's defensive depth after impressing in the SHL, securing his future with a three-year deal following the 2026 draft.
The Carolina Hurricanes have signed 2026 draftee William Hakansson to a three-year, entry-level contract.
The deal will pay Hakansson $850,000 in 2026-27, $900,000 in 2027-28 and $950,000 in 2028-29 at the NHL level and $87,500 each year at the AHL level.
He'll also receive $288,000 over the course of the contract in signing bonuses, as well as a potential $40,000 in games-played bonus in year three.
“William proved he could hold his own playing with men in the SHL last season,” said Carolina GM Eric Tulsky. “We’re excited to support his continued development.”
Hakansson was the Hurricanes' first pick of the 2026 draft, going 51st overall.
The 6-foot-4 Swedish blueliner brings a steady defensive game, blending it with strong skating and a physically mature body.
"William Hakansson is a player we've known very well playing in the international events and in Sweden," said Associate GM Darren Yorke. "He's a big, rangy defenseman that skates well, has nastiness. I think you guys all know how we play and what we want out of our defensemen. To be able to hold tight gaps and be able to play fast defensively and he fits that style of play perfectly."
