In a recent article for The Athletic, Aaron Portzline had the chance to interview Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell. In the interview, he asked about the status of Yegor Chinakhov after the reported trade request from earlier this off-season.
Portzline noted that the trade request has now been rescinded, which means a move could still happen if Waddell finds a good return. For now, Chinakhov is heading into 2025-26 training camp looking to impress the coaches.
Waddell told Portzline that Chinakhov was one of the first players back in Columbus for camp. He added, “Him being here early … it’s a very positive sign."
Waddell also said that if Chinakhov wants to stay in Columbus long term, communication will be important.
“If he stays, we’d have to sit down and make sure everybody’s on the same page,” Waddell said. “Regardless of where he plays, he’s going to be a restricted free agent, and I know he wants to stay over here (in North America) and make an NHL salary.”
Last season, Chinakhov had seven goals and eight assists in 30 games before missing time with a back injury in late November. He is entering his fourth season with the team, the final year of his contract, and is set to become a restricted free agent this off-season.
