John Hefti-USA TODAY Sports - Six Top Comebacks in Dallas Stars History

There's an old saying, "it's not how you start, it's how you finish."

That phrase certainly applies for teams who trail in the third period of a hockey game, only to roar back and snatch victory out of the hands of defeat (pardon another cliche).

The Dallas Stars pulled off a thrilling comeback against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday, a 7-6 overtime victory after trailing 6-3 early in the third period. It not only saved them from an embarrassing loss to a team who won't make the playoffs, but put them back in first place in the Central Division.

This isn't Dallas' first rodeo when it comes to third-period heroics. Here's a look at six other similar comebacks that occurred in the third period, leaving Stars fans overjoyed and opponents wondering what just happened.

Criteria was based on three-plus goal deficits in the third period, referenced from game summaries on NHL.com.

Note: The Minnesota North Stars had several similar comebacks before moving to Dallas; however, we're concentrating on the Stars' results only.

    1. October 21, 1993: Dallas Stars at Ottawa Senators

    Third Period Deficit: 5-1

Final Outcome: Stars 6, Senators 5 (Overtime)

The Stars' first season in Dallas had some memorable moments, including this comeback early in the 1993-94 campaign.

The Senators jumped on Dallas for three goals in the first period and one in the second before Dave Gagner finally got the Stars on the board with his third goal of the season at the 10:54 mark. Bob Kudelski got one back at 18:23, and the Senators went into the third frame with a 5-1 lead.

Brent Gilchrist notched his third goal of the season to cut the deficit to 5-2 at 10:01. Grant Ledyard made it 5-3 just 26 seconds later, while Neal Broten trimmed the score to 5-4 at 11:43.

Mike Craig picked a great time to score his first goal of the season, tying the game 5-5 on a power play at 13:09, with an assist from Mike Modano.

Gilchrist came through again with the winning goal just 1:56 into overtime to send the Ottawa fans home disappointed.

    2. November 23, 2022: Chicago Blackhawks at Dallas Stars

    Third Period Deficit: 4-1

Final Outcome: Stars 6, Blackhawks 4

The Blackhawks were already in a tailspin, having lost four in a row as they headed to American Airlines Arena.

The Stars extended that losing streak with five unanswered goals in the third to erase a 4-1 deficit. They waited until midway through the period to strike.

Jamie Benn got it started on a power play with his ninth goal of the season at 10:15 to narrow Chicago's lead to 4-2. Mason Marchment followed at 13:58, then Ty Dellandrea knotted the score 4-4 at the 14:12 mark.

At 18:27, Radek Faksa delivered what proved to be the game-winner on a wrist shot. For good measure, Jason Robertson added his 16th goal of the season on an empty-netter with just nine seconds left to secure a 6-4 victory for the Stars. With that goal, Robertson tied the Dallas point-streak record of 13.

    3. November 28, 2015: Dallas Stars at Minnesota Wild

    Third Period Deficit: 3-0

Final Outcome: Stars 4, Wild 3

Minnesota took a 3-0 lead at 1:11 of the second period on a Jason Pominville goal, his first of the 2015-16 season.

That lead held until 4:57 of the third period, when Alex Goligoski scored on a deflected shot for his second goal of the season to break the Wild shutout. Jamie Benn cut the deficit to 3-2 on a shorthanded goal at the 9:43 mark, and John Klingberg tied the game 3-3 on a tip-in for his fifth goal of the year at 14:34.

Tyler Seguin finished off the comeback 3:57 into OT on a backhander. The Stars outshot Minnesota 44-26.

    4. March 30, 2007: Detroit Red Wings at Dallas Stars

    Third Period Deficit: 3-0

Final Outcome: Stars 4, Red Wings 3 (Shootout)

Dallas trailed the Red Wings 3-0 until the 11:01 mark of the third period, when Brenden Morrow took advantage of a power play for his 13th goal of the season on a backhanded shot to spoil the shutout. Mike Ribeiro scored on a wrister to make the score 3-2 at 16:31, and Philippe Boucher tied the score at the 17:18 mark.

The two teams were scoreless in overtime. Sergei Zubov scored the only goal in the shootout to notch another come-from-behind win for Dallas.

    5. March 24, 2007: Dallas Stars at Phoenix (Now Arizona) Coyotes

    Third Period Deficit: 3-0

Final Outcome: Stars 4, Coyotes 3

The Stars seemed to have a knack of fighting back from 3-0 deficits in the third period during the 2006-07 season.

Just six days prior to the Detroit comeback, Dallas trailed 3-0 until 36 seconds into the third period, when Brenden Morrow tallied his 12th goal of 2007-08 on a wrister. Antti Miettinen made it 3-2 on a power play at 6:13, then Loui Eriksson tied things up with a wrister at 13:45.

Neither team could score in the overtime or the shootout until Jere Lehtinen scored in the seventh round for the 4-3 Stars win.

    6. February 8, 1997: Phoenix Coyotes at Dallas Stars

    Third Period Deficit: 4-1 Coyotes

Final Outcome: Stars 5, Coyotes 4 (Overtime)

The Stars and Coyotes met again in another come-from-behind effort, this time during the 1996-97 season.

Dallas outshot the Coyotes by a whopping 50-23, but the game was much closer than the stat sheet indicated. At 6:02 of the third period, Dave Reid cut the Phoenix lead to 4-2 on his 15th goal of the season.

Brent Gilchrist narrowed the margin to 4-3 at 16:39, and Pat Verbeek evened things at 4-4 at the 17:21 mark.

Verbeek wasn't done, ramming home the game-winner for his 14th goal of the season 3:50 into overtime, and the Stars had another comeback notch on their belt.
