Connor McDavid is once again competing with the best of the best.
The Edmonton Oilers convincing 7-2 victory against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night seemed like a historical night for Canadian hockey. With the Oilers posting stats that compare to multiple hockey giants.
Connor McDavid notched three points in the first period.
He and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins assisted on Leon Draisaitl's power play goal that opened the scoring in the game. This was McDavid's 80th assist of the year.
It was a one-timer slap shot that Draisaitl blasted after exchanging the puck with Nugent-Hopkins.

Not long after, McDavid scored on the power play to put the Oilers up 2-0. Then the Capitals scored two goals in a row.
Later on in the first, McDavid would assist on Zach Hyman's tie-breaking wrister to make the score 3-2 for the Oilers, the first goal of Hyman's (eventual) hat trick. He's up to four hat tricks so far this year.
Wednesday marked the eighth time in his career that Connor McDavid notched three points in a first period. This gives him the second-most times in Oilers history, just ahead of former Oilers forward Mark Messier, who had seven, and behind only Wayne Gretzky who had a whopping 29.
With eight three point first periods, McDavid slides ahead of Sidney Crosby. The Pittsburgh Penguins superstar has seven three point first periods and is tied with Calder Trophy winner Artemi Panarin in that regard.
This is further proof of McDavid's dominance in today's NHL. Perhaps the craziest thing about all of this is McDavid is only 27-years old.
