The majority of hockey players hit the green once the offseason hits. It's no different for Edmonton Oilers' Zach Hyman. However, the forward takes it a step further by organizing a fundraising event around the sport of golf.
Enter the Zach Hyman Celebrity Classic.
The event features live entertainment, meals, giveaways, contests, silent auctions in addition to a golf tournament. Proceeds from the event are donated to a variety of charities and initiatives. UJA Foundation, Stollery Children's Hospital, Colby's Kidz and Sick Kids.
Prior to this year's installment the event had raised nearly $2-million.
Elliotte Friedman reported that the event raised "just under $500k" in a Twitter post on Thursday morning. He also praised the volunteers and organizers of the event.
That combined with what the event has fundraised over the previous four years, and the total is close to $2.5-million raised. That is a huge win for every one of the charities involved with this event.
Events like this are important for hockey players and hockey fans. Hyman has a tremendous amount of influence in the minds of a lot of people. It's great to see someone like him put on an event like this.
For the sake of these charities, let's hope there are many more years of this fantastic event.
