Connor McDavid fits that description to the letter - literally. The captain of the Edmonton Oilers let's his work ethic and determination do the talking.
His teammates have taken notice.
Connor Brown in particular has latched onto McDavid. They played together for the OHL's Erie Otters and had the opportunity to connect again for the 2023-24 NHL season.
The Hockey News had the privilege of sitting down with Brown before the end of the regular season for an exclusive interview. What he said about McDavid spoke volumes. About McDavid's character, ambition and determination.
McDavid doesn't just show up on game days - he shows up every single day. Brown emphasized that point, "I had the privilege of being on his team when we were young. It's not just every night, it's every day."
Brown has marvelled at the captain's dedication all year. He has seen the work that goes into being the best in the league, "it's a privilege to watch the best in the world go about his process. When you're up close and personal you start to understand that it's not an accident."
He emphasized McDavid's skill and his daily push to be better as the reasons for his success, "he's got gifted with tons of talent, but it's not an accident [that] he is where he is."
"He works at it. It's a choice every day to be the best version of himself, and he drags his teammates along with him."
It's not all about skill and talent, it's about waking up every single day and making the most of what is available to you. Talent certainly helps - there is no question of that - but it isn't everything.

Brown has been making the most of being in the lineup. He has three points in his last three games. He's been a key cog in the Oilers' penalty kill.
"It's a privilege to be on his club."
