The Edmonton Oilers were given a bit more breathing room in the standings thanks to the San Jose Sharks.
EDMONTON -- At the time of this writing the Edmonton Oilers have a hold of third place in the Pacific Division. With 59 points in 45 games they are five points behind the Vegas Golden Knights and 11 points back of the Vancouver Canucks.

The battle for the two Wild Card positions in the Western Conference is primarily between four teams - the Los Angeles Kings, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues and Seattle Kraken.
The biggest ace in the hole for the Oilers is the fact that they have played the least number of games out of any team in the NHL. The Oilers have played 45 games so far - with the next lowest Western Conference team being the Kings (who have played 47 games).

The Oilers have five games and four games in hand on the Golden Knights and Canucks respectively. They have four games in hand against the Blues and five games in hand on both the Predators and Kraken.
With the Kraken specifically, they were given a bit more breathing room with the San Jose Sharks defeating the Kraken, 2-0. The Sharks were out-shot 32-22. Both goals from the Sharks were scored in the third period.

To have the last placed team in the division take points away from a team chasing the Oilers should have fans sleeping better at night.
There is another game on tap tonight with Wild Card implications. The Predators will play against the Kings. The Predators won their first game against each other 2-1 earlier this month (January 18). They will have one more game against each other on February 22nd.
