Oilers Decided Against Acquiring Top Trade Target

Elliotte Friedman gave another small Edmonton Oilers nugget from the aftermath of the trade deadline.

Edmonton Oilers have the second fewest goals scored against them all season.

EDMONTON -- The 2024 trade deadline - otherwise known as the gift that keeps on giving.

It's been 11 days since the trade deadline, where the Edmonton Oilers acquired Adam Henrique, Sam Carrick and Troy Stecher. They elected not to trade anyone away from the team - and instead added the three players using only draft picks in exchange.

Since then the Oilers are 2-0-2, receiving points in four straight games. In the latest game against the Colorado Avalanche, Sean Walker scored two goals against the Oilers.

Walker, was a reported trade target of the Oilers. Some new information about that has come out in the latest 32 Thoughts podcast.

While discussing the latest Avalanche - Oilers game, Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman discussed Walker. Friedman said, "Edmonton took a long look at [Sean] Walker and ultimately decided not to do it. And Colorado got him."

My Take

Just from watching Walker live on Saturday night, you can see how fast Walker plays hockey. He's constantly moving his feet and pushing the pace of the game.

The Oilers could use more pace in their defense group - so being able to add Walker would have been a huge compliment to their team. If they could have acquired Walker without giving up any pieces, you'd think that would have made the team better.

At the end of the day the Oilers made their decision, and now must tweak the defense pairings to find the best mix before the playoffs.
