The Edmonton Oilers trade deadline plans may benefit from calling up Jack Campbell.

The Edmonton Oilers trade deadline plans may benefit from calling up Jack Campbell.

EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Oilers lost a tough game last night to the Minnesota Wild. Although they ferociously out-shot them they landed on the wrong side of the scoreboard with a 4-2 loss.

Some may blame the goalie - Calvin Pickard - but others blame the lack of capitalising on scoring chances. In Kris Knoblauch's own words last night, "I think we did a lot of good things, one thing that I didn't think we did well was finish."

With the trade deadline 13 days away, the Oilers need to put themselves in the best position to succeed. Both in games and with acquiring the upgrades they need to go deep into the playoffs.

The best way that they can do that? Call up Jack Campbell to the NHL.

Its Time to Showcase Jack Campbell

Campbell has been playing extremely consistently in the AHL over the past while. Since the calendar turned over to 2024, his performances have turned the page.

Since January 1st he has played in 11 games for the Bakersfield Condors. In those games he has allowed 27 goals on 349 shots. That leaves him with a 2.45 goals against average (GAA) and a .923 save percentage (SV%).

That consistency should warrant a call up - for the simple purpose of showing the other 31 general managers in the league that Campbell has regained his form. It's one thing to have your play rebound in the AHL, it's another for that to translate to the NHL.

They Need to Move Money to Add at the Deadline

When you look at the Oilers assets that could potentially be moved, none have a significant cap hit. Brett Kulak, Cody Ceci, Philip Broberg and even Warren Foegele all have a salary of $3.25-million or less.

Campbell is on the hook for $5-million for the rest of this year plus three more years. Moving Campbell is the best way for the Oilers to add multiple players before the trade deadline.

It could mean a package of multiple assets along with Campbell. However, getting the former Toronto Maple Leafs cap hit off of the books is the best way to make the additions they want to the team in the most financially sensible way.
