The Edmonton Oilers bolstered their blue line with veteran Connor Murphy, adding defensive grit and penalty-kill prowess to shore up their back end.

The Edmonton Oilers made a decisive move ahead of the NHL trade deadline, acquiring veteran right-shot defenceman Connor Murphy from the Chicago Blackhawks. The deal, first reported by Elliotte Friedman, sends a 2028 second-round pick to Chicago, which retains 50 percent of Murphy’s $4.4 million cap hit, bringing Edmonton’s commitment down to $2.2 million.

Murphy, 32, is a pending unrestricted free agent and brings a steady, defence-first identity to a blue line that has lacked consistency this season. At 6-foot-4 and 212 pounds, he plays a physical, low-risk game, logging heavy penalty-kill minutes while blocking shots and handling tough defensive-zone assignments. He has 13 points, 62 hits, and 87 blocks in 60 games this season, but offense isn’t the priority.

Trending Stories:

Murphy is expected to slot into the top four, likely alongside Jake Walman, allowing Mattias Ekholm and Evan Bouchard to remain intact while easing the workload on Darnell Nurse. These combinations are clearly not set in stone, as the Oilers played with their pairings a bit at Monday's practice.

What seems clear is that Murphy could play a top-four role and get prime minutes, perhaps around 18 minutes per game.

As for what people are thinking about the trade...

As per Bob Stauffer: "The  Edmonton Oilers acquire a veteran, cycle-stopping, right shot D in Connor Murphy. He led the Blackhawks in TOI on one of the best PK units in the NHL. ‘Hawks had multiple suitors for Murphy."

Former Oiler and Spittin' Chiclets host Ryan Whitney writes, "Love the Connor Murphy move. Big tough and a great teammate. Awesome addition to the right side for the Oilers."

The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta added, "Solid move by the Oilers to get Connor Murphy out of Chicago at 50% retained salary. He comes in at $2.2M, which was made possible for the Oilers with Janmark on LTIR and Mangiapane sent down. We’ll see if they can add a 3C over the next few days."

After his media availability on Monday, Bowman joined Stauffer on Oilers Now, and called Murphy a great person and great teammate. "I think the thing the defines Murph's game. He's someone who takes a lot of pride in playing defense and being hard to play against. He's got that physical size and he's willing to play a rugged game. I think he enjoys the challenge of playing against good players and trying to shut them down."

Bowman acknowledged the Oilers’ defensive struggles in a media avail just hours before the deal became public knowledge. One has to wonder if he knew the entire time he was speaking that he was making this deal.

Either way, he suggested whoever the Oilers brought in wouldn't be the reason the ship was turned around in Edmonton. He pointed to a team-wide mentality that has leaned too far toward offense at the expense of structure. This is where someone like Murphy can help. Edmonton has scored in bunches but has also left its goaltenders exposed. That's not Murphy's game. He doesn't provide much offense, but plays a smarter, simpler brand of hockey.

The Murphy trade represents phase one of Edmonton’s deadline plan. Phase two seems to be targeting a center. There is a lot of chatter that Nicolas Roy, out of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, is on Bowman's radar.

This deal also takes Edmonton out of the running for Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who many insiders had as someone the Oilers were targeting.
