EDMONTON – The playoffs are often a game of inches.
The Edmonton Oilers are on a deep playoff run for the second consecutive season – which is more impressive than anything I’ve ever done in my life.

Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard, Stuart Skinner, and Zach Hyman have each contributed in large part to the current position this team holds. However, it cannot be understated how active the fans at Rogers Place are once the puck hits the ice.

Fans fiercely chant as their team plays. If you have ever wondered what exactly they have been shouting while you watch on TV (or while present at Rogers Place), then you are in the right place.
Here’s the list of chants that they have had throughout the 2025 playoffs:
The most basic phrase that Oilers fans chant the most is, “Let’s Go Oilers.” This is to cheer on the team and give them a boost during the game. Whether they are behind, ahead, or look like they need some encouragement, this is the best way for fans to do that.
Penalties are a big part of the game. Sometimes, the referees make a bad call (shocking, I know), and this chant lets the referees know what the fans think of their latest call.
Oilers vs Panthers: Referees Announced For Game 2
EDMONTON – Game 1 ended up the way that the Edmonton Oilers wanted.
Whoever the goaltender is for the opposing team (the guy in the net the Oilers are trying to score on), often faces the brunt of the chants. In the first round of the 2025 playoffs, the Oilers played the Los Angeles Kings. Their goaltender was named Darcy Kuemper. So, the fans chant his last name.
Here’s another chant specific to the 2025 playoff run. In the second round, the Oilers played the Vegas Golden Knights. Their starting goaltender was named Adin Hill, which presented a unique challenge for fans.
Two-syllable last names are perfect for chanting. “Hill” doesn’t fit the bill, however, if you stretch out the first name like “A-din,” it works perfectly.
In the Western Conference Final, the Oilers played the Dallas Stars. Their starting goalie was named Jake Oettinger. As you can see, his first name is one syllable and his last name is three syllables. So Oilers fans decided to chant the extended version of Jake, i.e, Jacob. It’s not great, but it works.
In this case, Oettinger also goes by the nickname "Otter." Otter would have fit the unspoken two-syllable rule, making it a perfectly chantable name.
Oilers fans were divided on what to chant for Oettinger. As I noted in the entry before this one, his name isn’t great for chanting. However, Oilers fans found a ruthless way to troll him, even though they weren't the first to do it during this playoff run.
Oettinger plays for Team USA at international events. Team USA’s top goalie is from the Winnipeg Jets (Connor Hellebuyck), making Oettinger the backup. Oettinger has gone on record saying that one of his hockey dreams is to be the starting goalie for Team USA.
Like I said, ruthless play by Oilers fans with this one.
The Stanley Cup was displayed on the ice before puck drop for Game 1 inside Rogers Place. Once fans could see the cup in front of their eyes, they began salivating. The last time the Oilers won the Cup was the year I was born (1990).
To say that fans are eager for another championship is a bit of an understatement.
Finally, the Oilers are playing the Florida Panthers for the second straight Stanley Cup Final, and this last chant is (yet again) related to their starting goalie.
Sergei Bobrovsky is the name of the player in the net for the Panthers. That first name is perfect for chanting – it’s two syllables and there aren’t any fans trying to come up with something more complicated that their fellow inebriated crowdmates can’t follow along with.
