EDMONTON -- Connor McDavid has broken through.

The Edmonton Oilers captain had been left out of the goal column until last night. McDavid scored the team's fourth goal of the night. That propelled the team into a comfortable position, that they proceeded to run away with. The final score was an 8-1 thumping of the Florida Panthers.

While this was his first Stanley Cup Final goal, he's been notching assists like a human apple tree. He has 32 this playoff run now. That puts him (once again) in the presence of greatness.

McDavid had the primary assist on Dylan Holloway's second goal of the night. He finished the game with one goal and three assists in 17:27 of ice time.
Wayne Gretzky's previous record was 31 assists. A feat he accomplished in 1987-88. Gretzky achieved that in 19 games, it took McDavid 22 games to beat it. McDavid now holds the record for most assists in a single playoff year.
It's truly remarkable to see McDavid do the things he's been doing this year. He now has over 130 assists combined from the regular season and the postseason.

The next record he could hunt down - most points in a single playoff year. McDavid needs nine more points to tie the record set by Gretzky of 47 points.
If the Oilers stretch this series to seven games, he just might do it.
