The Florida Panthers recalled a group of players from the American Hockey League on Sunday, creating the team’s ‘Black Aces’ for the playoffs.

Every season, teams competing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs will add a group of players to their postseason roster who don’t actually practice with the guys who were already on the roster.

Those players, generally a mix of top prospects and skilled players who have some experience under their belt, usually will practice in their own group and not see a whole lot of the regular roster guys.

They are the insurance policy. The ‘break glass in case of emergency’ guys who, hopefully for the Panthers, aren’t needed to play another game this season.

This year’s group features Mackie Samoskevich, Justin Sourdif, Rasmus Asplund, Mike Benning, Matt Kiersted, William Lockwood, Patrick Giles and Magnus Hellberg.

Giles was added to Florida's roster Monday while the seven others were added Sunday.

All were a part of the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers this past season, which came to a sudden and surprising end after they were eliminated from the Calder Cup Playoffs in an upset by the Hartford Wolfpack.

The seven players were added to the Panthers playoff roster on Sunday.

Monday, Florida will host the Boston Bruins in Game 1 of their second round matchup.

The puck drops from Amerant Bank Arena at 8 p.m.
